Dear Friends,
The High Holy days are coming in just over a week and we have been working diligently in preparation for them. I loved getting to meet so many of you over these last few weeks and it has been a pleasure.
Two Sundays ago, I had the opportunity to join the Book Club for their review of Amy Jill Levine’s book, The Bible With and Without Jesus. Not only is she one of the preeminent scholars on the New Testament and Jewish, but she was also recently elected to head the venerable organization, the Catholic Biblical Association. She is the first Jewish scholar to ever lead that organization.
At the end of the meeting, one of the participants came up to me and shared that one of our members was in a nursing home of which I had been unaware. Because of that sharing, I was able to visit her, introduce myself and set a plan to see her again.
All this to say, if you are aware of someone in our Jewish community who is in a nursing home or hospital, please share that with me so that I might be able to visit them. Or even if you know of someone that might benefit from a call or home visit, let me know.
In the Mishnah, we are taught that we should visit the sick, and that it is one of the most basic mitzvot (obligations) we have. The rabbis added this teaching to our morning service to remind us daily that we should be reaching out to those who might otherwise be forgotten.
I hope you can help me in this endeavor as we welcome the New Year and new beginnings! Shana Tovah and May You Be Inscribed for Life in the New Year!
Blessings,
Rabbi

Our annual Project Isaiah food drive officially launches this week. We will have Food Bank barrels in the vestibule and a tzedakah box for cash or checks.
We are not providing bags this year, but please see the Food Bank web site here for what food items are most useful. Also, note their comment here that they can provide up to 75 meals for each $25 donation.
Our Facebook Project Isaiah donation page is another very handy way to participate. Please consider our food insecure neighbors during this joyous season.

Our dinner at Loaves and Fishes last Sunday (August 30) was a huge success, thanks to the support of many congregants who contributed food and helped to serve and clean up. We served about 130 firsts and 40 seconds and did not run out of anything!
The next CBS-led meal at Loaves and Fishes will be Sunday, November 29th. Please join us.
