Board Nominations
The nominating committee is pleased to bring the following slate to the congregation for vote on Sunday:

Tisya Cooke
Marc Alexander
Tony Winkler

Their application statements are as follows:

Tony Winkler:
As a younger member of the congregation with a growing family, I care deeply about the long-term strength and direction of CBS. I believe I can bring value by helping represent the next generation of members while staying grounded in the traditions and values that make this community strong.
I’ve built relationships across a wide range of our community and feel comfortable engaging with people who come to Judaism from different perspectives. I tend to approach situations with a balanced mindset, recognizing that meaningful progress often comes from understanding and integrating multiple viewpoints rather than choosing sides.
Professionally, my background is in business development, marketing, and project leadership, where I focus on building systems, growing organizations, and turning ideas into execution. I would bring that same practical, forward-moving approach to board service.
I also have a strong personal interest in deeper Jewish learning and engagement, and I’m always looking for ways to help make that more accessible and relevant within the community.
I’d be honored to serve and contribute where I can.

Marc Alexander:
I have previously served multiple terms on the CBS Board, and I am familiar with our operating procedures.  In the past, I have created programming for both entertainment and educational purposes.  I have served on many subcommittees and had to make difficult decisions along the way.  With some life cycle and work commitments now behind me, I hoped to give back to my community through additional service.

I would be honored and appreciative of the committee’s consideration.

Tisya Cooke:
It has been a tremendous honor to serve on the Board of Congregation Beth Shalom over the past several years and to work alongside this remarkable community during my time in Columbia. Before relocating to Mid-Missouri, I had the privilege of serving Jewish communities in St. Louis, including as a USY Youth Advisor at Kol Rinah and as a technical advisor for B’nai Amoona.

When I arrived in Columbia in 2019, I was searching for a renewed connection to synagogue life and community engagement. Congregation Beth Shalom provided exactly that — fostering meaningful relationships, inspiring collaboration, and reigniting my passion for Jewish leadership, including leading services and teaching B’nai Mitzvah students.

Throughout my tenure on the Board, I have remained committed to strengthening both the operational and communal foundations of our congregation. My work has focused on modernizing the infrastructure used to broadcast services and special events, enhancing the security and reliability of our wireless networks, serving on the Security Committee to help develop safety protocols and coordinate upcoming security improvements, and expanding our social media outreach to better engage younger and emerging members of our community.

I am excited for the opportunity to continue serving Congregation Beth Shalom, to work alongside Rabbi Roger Lerner as he joins us this summer, and to help ensure that our congregation remains a vibrant, welcoming, and forward-looking Jewish home for all across Mid-Missouri.

Rabbi Roger Lerner officially starts his work with us on July 1st. The CBS Transition Committee is excited to welcome him and to help him settle in.

One of our tasks is setting up social get-togethers with congregants. This may include meals in members’ homes, gatherings in local coffee shops or at CBS, or activities such as walks or bike rides on the Katy Trail.

If you are interested in meeting our new rabbi in a small group setting, click here to sign up.

You will be asked to sign up by categories. If you are flexible about how you would like to participate, you may sign up for more than one category (though we’ll probably only schedule you for one.). We’ll get back to you with possible dates in June, when we know the Rabbi’s schedule.

The categories on the signup sheet are:
 — I’ll host a dinner in my home for up to eight people (can be potluck)
 — I’ll contribute a course to a dinner in someone’s home
 — I’d like to go out for a meal or coffee
 — I’d like to meet in a small group at CBS
 — I’d like to go for a bike ride on the Katy Trail with the rabbi and a small group of congregants
— I’d like to go for a walk in Rock Bridge State Park or on the Katy trail with the rabbi and a small group of congregants

Also, we’d like to collect welcome messages and suggestions from members for getting to know Columbia and the area – favorite coffee shops, restaurants, hiking trails, museums, galleries, etc. We’ll provide blank cards at the CBS annual meeting (next Sunday, May 17th at 10 am). Or send a note to Judith at goodmanjc@health.missouri.edu.

With thanks,

Transition Committee
Judith Goodman, chair
Emily Colvin, Mary Hartigan, Jessica Messing, Tim Parshall, Sheri Radman, Margie Sable, Tony Winkler
In months with a fifth Sunday, CBS provides a full dinner to fellow Columbians in need through the Loaves & Fishes program. We are serving Sunday, May 31st, and we need donations of food items as well as volunteers to set up, serve, and clean up.

Bring food to the Ashley Street Center, 1509 Ashley Street (use the door with the ramp), at 3:30 pm that day. Volunteers setting up/serving should also arrive by 3:30 pm. Clean-up crew should arrive by 5:30 pm.

We expect to serve about 150 meals, and the need for volunteers to serve is especially critical.

Click here for the sign-up list. And thanks!
